Heights High alumni ready to perform in Grog Shop shows

After the success of the “Once Again: Cleveland Heights Throwback Artist Showcase” in April, two more events of the same title are set for July.

Two different groups of Cleveland Heights High School alumni will perform July 8 and July 15. Both shows will be at 8 p.m. at the Grog Shop, 2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Heights.

More than 10 Heights High alumni, including a host and a disc jockey, came together to create the first showcase April 22 at the Euclid Tavern in Cleveland. Most of that group will return to the stage July 15.

The July 8 showcase will feature a new group of artists.

“The idea behind ‘Once Again’ is to showcase the musical talent that came out of Cleveland Heights,” executive producer Mai Moore, a 1995 Heights High graduate, said in a press release.

A variety of musical genres — including electropop, hip-hop, alternative pop and soul — will be featured at the showcases, Moore said.

“All persons involved have the main focus of their love for Cleveland Heights,” she said. “The world needs to know that there is tons of talent in Cleveland Heights and that ‘Heights’ is a very unique place.”

The new group of artists who will perform July 8 includes:

• Early da Chief, also known as James Sutherland, hip-hop, class of 2005;

• G Club, also known as Golden Barker, hip-hop, class of 1993;

• Jay Floyd, hip-hop, class of 1994;

• The Brovament (Big Whiskey, also known as Roderick Gibbs and Curtis Britton), hip-hop, class of 1993;

• Peazaie Dibiosi, also known as Damion Towns, hip-hop, class of 1995;

• Kellen Walker, R&B and soul, class of 2005;

• Stacia Rhodes, soul and reggae, class of 1996;

• Antoine Dunn, retro soul, class of 2006;

• Chop Chop, also known as Catherine Cavanagh, electropop band, class of 1994.

This event will be hosted by Anthony Jones, class of 1993. The DJ is Brick Barnes, also known as Brandon Mathis, class of 1995.

Fans of MADBALL should expect the sound that they have always loved, but some evolution as well. “There’s a certain sound that we’re known for, and as much as we want to evolve with the times, we also have to keep in mind that there’s a certain standard and integrity with MADBALL, and we have to preserve that,” mentions Cricien. “Real deal hardcore kids totally appreciate that. That said, the foundation always has to be a certain sound, but we always bring new elements into our sound. There has to be some evolution. It might appeal to people outside of the hardcore realm, but in the end, it’s going to be a MADBALL record.
