White Mountains is the place to camp out, fish

WHITE MOUNTAINS - If you like camping there is no better place than the White Mountains of eastern Arizona.

There are more campgrounds than any one person can possibly visit in a summer including the Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area on Old Linden Road in Show Low, the Show Low Lake Campground on Show Low Lake Road, the Lakeside Campground across from the Apache-Sitgreaves Ranger Station in Lakeside and Hawley Lake.

Camp Host Cindy Allen said the Show Low Lake Campground is open for camping.

Propane and gas stoves are allowed, but absolutely no open wood or charcoal cooking fires and no campfires.

Allen said the campground has four gas powered boat rentals available and a single row boat for those who prefer fishing on the water rather than from the shore or dock. All rentals are on a first come, first served basis.

For those who forget to purchase fishing licenses before arriving, Allen said both residential and non-residential licenses can be purchased at Show Low Lake.

Allen said recently laid foundations have allowed them to put up and offer the tent rentals that come with electricity and stoves for cooking.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation area is located off Old Linden Road in Show Low. According to Fool Hollow representative Dewayne Saxton, there is plenty of world-class fishing at the lake due to it being a bass tournament facility.

He said swimming is at a person's own risk and because it is a tournament fishing lake, people should wear shoes if they go swimming or wading.

Saxton noted that fishers will not only find large and small mouth Bass at Fool Hollow Lake, but catfish, walleye and blue gill. Boats are limited to 10 hp.

The recreation area is now on total reservation status, meaning reservations must be made to secure a spot. That can be accomplished by going to azstateparks.com or by calling (800) 586-2283.

"The forest is closed right now meaning nothing that makes a spark or leaves ashes is allowed," Saxton said.

Propane and gas stoves are permissible, but absolutely no open charcoal or wood fires and no campfires due to stage 1 fire restrictions.

Saxton said that while approved cooking devices can be used, if visitors leave their campsite they should make certain they do not leave a propane or gas stove burning.
