Barbie doll inspires more than fashion

When I was growing up, I played with Barbies every day. I would sit cross-legged on the floor for hours and make up whole imaginary worlds for myself. The Christmas I was 7 years old, my parents surprised me with a Barbie dream house. They also gave me complete sets of furniture to fill the pink plastic rooms. That Christmas remains my favorite Christmas ever.

My dollhouse was set up in the basement, since there was no room for it in my bedroom. My mom attempted to keep things organized by buying stackable plastic bins for my Barbie clothes and accessories, but I never used them. I kept my Barbies’ world assembled, leaving out the tiny hairbrushes and the sharp high heels that would always end up under my dad’s feet.

Surprisingly, given all the Barbie stuff I had, I only owned one Ken. He, along with a few Disney prince dolls, made up the entire male population of my Barbie world. More often than not, the male dolls would lie off to the side, only to be picked up if my Barbie wanted to go on a date. My Barbies’ lives did not revolve around Ken. They were too busy solving mysteries, teaching school or being interior decorators. Sometimes my Barbies were even single mothers, raising the dolls marketed as Barbie’s little sisters.

Growing up, I never gave much thought to playing with Barbies. But as I grew older I began to hear the negative attitudes toward her. My mother wasn’t allowed to have a Barbie growing up because my grandmother thought it was a “sex symbol.”

Barbie’s figure is pretty absurd. I heard once that if a woman had her proportions she would only have room for one lung.

But Barbie is more than just an impossible figure with an awesome wardrobe. Besides the careers I made up for her in my basement, Barbie has been a pilot, an Olympic athlete, a surgeon and a CEO. Barbie went to the moon before man landed on it and became president in 2000.

Of course, Barbie landed on the moon in a pink spacesuit and she wears heels in the operating room. But Barbie taught me that being a successful woman doesn’t mean you can’t like pink or wear high heels. And just because you wear dresses and have long blond hair does not mean you have to depend on Ken.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but Barbie had another impact on me. Playing with the dolls gave me an outlet for telling stories, which in turn fostered my love for writing and journalism.
