FINALE ON THE FOURTH: Helena Babe Ruth 4th of July Tourney wraps up

The Fourth of July typically means the height of summer. A long weekend filled with ideal weather, patriotism and fireworks. Some barbecue, others head for their cabins on a river or lake.

In Helena, the first weekend in July is also synonymous with youth baseball, and this year was no different. Thirty-two teams ranging in age from nine to 15 from around the state, and as far away as Canada, congregated at the Capitol City’s Ryan-Exchange Fields for the annual Helena Babe Ruth Fourth of July Tournament.

This year the tournament’s climax fell on our nation’s Independence Day, and those teams left standing after the first three days of play battled it out for titles in four age brackets — 10U, 11U, 12U and 15U. The weather remained hot and dry Monday, as it had been all weekend, but the up-and-coming superstars showed no complaint and excelled in the sunshine.

Equipped with their spiffy uniforms, batting gloves and bat bags too big to carry themselves, the young participants spent the weekend emulating their favorite big leaguers. They may have even been able to teach them a thing or two with the enthusiasm, sportsmanship and hard work they displayed.

As the day wore on and the games amplified in importance, every big hit seemed to set off a tremor of cheering on one side of the diamond or the other. Coaches in cargo shorts harped lessons and sang praise to their young players as the drama unfolded. There was frustration, apprehension, redemption and finally exhalation as everyone ultimately came away smiling regardless of the outcome.

But it took far more than coaches and players to bring such a large tournament together. There were the umpires, scorekeepers, volunteers and all the dedicated parents. There were the idolizing batboy brothers and the other siblings dragged along against their wills. For some it was a sacrifice from a weekend of relaxation. For others it was a passion they wouldn’t know what to do without.

There were parents who experienced the event for the first time. Others experienced for the second or third time, or even with their second or third child. The Hubley family from Bozeman belongs in the latter category and watched their son, Adam, pitch a perfect game and strike out eight against Glendive to send the Bozeman 11U team to the title game against Helena, which they ultimately won 11-5.

Andrew Rossum started that game for the Helena All Stars, pitching two strong innings and homering for the second consecutive game to give Helena 11U an early 4-2 lead.
