Great Escape: Local Museum Showcases The Past
Visiting a museum does not necessarily mean a train ride into Manhattan, paying for parking or expensive admission fees. Right here in northeast Queens, residents can experience the history of the area at the Bayside Historical Society.
The society, located at 208 Totten Ave., was founded in 1964 to “collect, preserve and disseminate information concerning the history of Bayside, Queens and its adjacent communities,” according to the group's website .
The museum’s archives hold artifacts, artwork and documents from Bayside, Alley Pond and Fort Totten that detail the history of the area.
The society's mission is to work with the community and local schools to promote awareness and the preservation of Bayside, surrounding neighborhoods and the Lawrence Family Cemetery.
The museum features exhibits and virtual tours on their website throughout the year. Currently, there are seven exhibitions, including “The Women of Bayside,” “Bayside-On The Edge Of Modernity,” “That Was Then, This Is Now,” “Native Bayside,” “If The Hat Fits,” “Little Treasures,” and “The Castle.”
These programs run Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A donation amount of $3 is suggested for admission.
In addition to exhibits, the BHS hosts a series of educational classes focusing on social studies for grades two through 12, cultural programs and several events year-round.
They also provide private space, which features a ball room, lounge, boardroom, dining room and refurbished library, for catered or non-catered events. Membership allows visitors to enjoy advance notice of events at the museum and free admission.
So, the next time you are seeking cultural enrichment but do not want to travel to Manhattan, be sure check out the Bayside Historical Society.
