Don't get hooked by the phishers

SCAMMERS “phishing” for internet banking details by sending fake e-mails are targeting people in Worcestershire.

The county’s Regulatory Service is urging people not to fall prey to criminals who send out e-mails claiming to be from their bank.

The “sophisticated” scam first targets its victims by claiming access to their internet banking or their account has been blocked.

According to the fake e-mails, the only way to reactivate the account is to enter personal details including passwords and account numbers into an attached form or through a website.

Kim Bishopp, of the Lyppards, Warndon Villages, Worcester received nine e-mails supposedly from Lloyds TSB in less than a week. She said: “I was just astounded by it. When I opened up the attachment it looked so real.

“I just wonder how many people would fill it in and just carry on with it. When I spoke to Lloyds they said they didn’t send e-mails.

“I was so shocked that sort of thing could be done and so many innocent people could fall victim to it.”

A Regulatory Services spokesman said anyone who had an e-mail account was prone to receiving fake e-mails claiming to be from major banks.

He said: “This type of scam, commonly referred to as ‘phishing’, is getting increasingly sophisticated.

“The e-mail appears to come from your bank and is used to direct you to a mocked-up website asking for personal data such as account details, passwords and credit card numbers.

"The site however is fake, and once your details have been recorded they can they be used against you to commit identity fraud.

“A real bank will never ask you to reveal personal details online and we urge people to be really vigilant.”

People are also advised to report phishing e-mails to the relevant bank. For more advice, visit the website get safeonline.org

I can't help but feel no remorse for individuals that fall foul of these "phishers". We have internet browsers that can detect them, spam filters that can prevent the emails even hitting your inbox but more importantly, how many times and how many different ways can the message get out there that you should NEVER DISCLOSE PERSONAL INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET!! I can't help but feel no remorse for individuals that fall foul of these "phishers".
