Cattaraugus Civic League celebrates centennial

Gala performance marks Cattaraugus Civic League’s 100th anniversary

The Cattaraugus Civic League recently staged a gala celebration in honor of their 100th year of existence in the village.

The program was organized by Joan Cullen, who used her considerable talents of persuasion to coax unwary league members into writing (and even performing in) this ambitious anniversary production. Fortunately, they had a lot of help when Cattaraugus-Little Valley junior Tom Patterson showed up to coach the ladies on the ins and outs of show-biz in general and microphones in particular.

Actually, Tom was only one of many students who helped enliven and punctuate the show with acts reprised from the school’s spring musical extravaganza, “Tribute to Broadway.” This generous cooperation is typical of the long relationship between the Civic League and the school’s music department.

The evening’s program started with a welcome by this year’s Civic League president, Patricia Murphy, followed by Cullen’s recounting of the organization’s founding. She said the Cattaraugus Civic League got started in 1912, primarily through the efforts of another persuasive lady, Louise B. Johnson.

Choosing the Right Words for Persuasive Writing

Persuasive is a lot different than the more common writing, in which you are simply trying to provide your readers with some new information. However when you are writing, with the intention of talking someone into doing something, you need to be swaying and succinct. Given below are three important elements that you need to put into your writing to make sure that it is highly persuasive in nature.

Get your reader’s attention well in hand by using a method referred to as the “future glimpse.” You persuade your audience to take action by giving them a very real picture of the future once they’ve taken that action. If you really want to have them on the hook, show them what they have now and how different their future will be if they just take action today. Of course maintaining credibility is your number one priority so avoid making claims that are false. Things will not go well for you if you are unable to convince your audience that you are an authority in your field. Giving your audience plenty of solid information in your field will only confirm your authority on the subject and give you greater dominance and trust within the niche as you use this method to position yourself better. Social Proof: Looking at the others as an example to follow, to do and to avoid something is a psychological force to reckon with; this has turned into a crucial part of our decision making process because it is something we utilize every day of our lives. It is something so commanding, that it controls whether you do something for good or bad. After viewing testimonials, case studies and referrals by people, you can check out the most apparent instances of social proof. You can see that social proof is what is driving the social media today. However if you do it the right way you can actually add social proof into your writing, whether it be dropping names or writing an authoritative review.

Be Convincing: What person will listen and believe in you if you are not convincing? Your mode of writing needs to exude self assurance in order to make your copy convincing. You are making a commanding attempt to influence someone with your thoughts, this requires a degree of strength, and otherwise your reader may not take your work as intensely. Be bold in your writing and don’t stop yourself from writing down statements that you feel will make a difference. Testing your prose and taking your thoughts to the outer limits may provide you with outstanding ways to succeed and move forward.
