Flatware forges ahead

A smart, modern lifestyle requires versatile, modern flatware to match.

“People are choosing flatware for the way they live today,” says Jessica Ray, tabletop buyer for Halls.

Gone are the classic sterling silver pieces with floral handles young couples used to choose for their wedding registry, or inherit from grandparents. Gone also is all that polishing that just doesn’t seem to suit today’s busy lifestyles.

Good thing. The price of silver has been skyrocketing. A five-piece place setting goes for more than $1,000 right now, a request that’s hard to include on a wedding registry.

Fortunately, advances in the quality of stainless steel make it the more typical choice for customers of all ages and in all stages of life. And flatware designers are creating modern classics with more interest devoted to the materials used in the manufacturing process and new, decorative finishes for flatware handles.

“Flatware is something most people only buy two or three times in their life,” says Clayton Dibble, flatware product manager for Crate & Barrel. “It needs to hold up — to stand the test of time — because people aren’t buying it every five years. It should be timeless, something they will like 10 years from now.”

Flatware sets are more likely than ever to have a long tenure in the silverware drawer.

“People don’t want something too trendy in their flatware,” Ray says. “Modern, yes, and something current with a high quality of manufacturing, yes. Also, people are more conscious of the environment. They don’t want to throw old sets of flatware out.”

A personal choice

For her own 1889 Pendleton Heights home, Ray and her husband, Andrew, chose a pattern called Lucia made by Match, a U.S.-based company that sources its product, mainly pewter, from northern Italy.

“We liked the vintage feel and warmth of this pattern,” she says. “It matches nicely with a set of white plates trimmed in pewter we have.”

Pewter is popular for its casual look and its durability. It resists smudging and looks modern while maintaining a classic design sensibility.

“We love the look of our house — modern living with a vintage feel,” she says. “We felt this flatware had the same characteristics — easy care and clean lines for modern living, but the pewter feels like it could be 100 years old.”

Pewter is enjoying resurgence in popularity because it suggests a casual lifestyle and does not need to be polished. It is considered more modern than silver but has a softer feel than stainless steel. And for those who recall that pewter used to be made with lead, you may sleep soundly; it has been absent from lead manufacturing for more than 30 years.

Contrary to what one might guess, most flatware buyers aren’t necessarily brides.

“Couples with second homes, couples updating the choice they made at their engagement — there is no typical flatware customer anymore,” Ray says.

So what is considered on-trend right now? Here is a sampling.

Satin finishing

A satin finish is less shiny than the stainless steel with which we’re all familiar. It hides fingerprints and can withstand the daily grind of the dishwasher. It’s popular because it’s versatile, Dibble says.

“It can be used both as everyday flatware and for special occasions,” he says.

Crate & Barrel’s Foster and Stanton patterns are popular satin-finished choices.

Wood handles

Olivewood handles are new this year to Halls and Crate & Barrel.

“People want something interesting and alternative on the handle,” Ray says.

They are so beautiful in person, but are these dishwasher-safe? Yes.

Crate & Barrel carries a pattern called Olivier that is made in France, and Halls has a popular pattern called Montana Olive by Alain St. Joanis, a French company. The utensils’ blades, tines and spoon scoops are stainless steel.

Laser etching

Jardin de Eden is new this year to Halls. The intricate pattern is designed by Marcel Wanders and is manufactured by Christofle.

“They have laser-etched the blade of the knife with a garden pattern, and the spoon is etched all the way to the end,” Ray says.

“I’m sure we’ll see more of this technique in the future from others now that Christofle has done it,” Ray says.

The return to stainless and pewter, plus the introduction of more design-influenced manufacturing processes, opens up new options for flatware as well. And though our casual, collective lives probably won’t see a rush back to sterling silver (and all that polishing) of yesteryear, it’s still one of the most important decisions homeowners make. Rarely do we get so personal with our design decisions.

“It’s the most overlooked part of a place setting, but the most interactive,” Ray says.

RESOURCES
•Crate & Barrel: 4601 W. 119th St., Leawood, 913-469-5100, www.crateandbarrel.com

•Halls Plaza: 211 Nichols Road, 816-274-3222, www.halls.com

•Match:www.match1995.com

•Alain Saint-Joanis:www.alain-saint-joanis.com

•Christofle:www.christofle.
