“American Landscapes: Treasures from the Parrish Art Museum” at Florence ...

Old Lyme, 6 July 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA).

The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme is hosting an exhibition of more than forty American landscapes from the Parrish Art Museum in New York. “American Landscapes: Treasures from the Parrish Art Museum” is running until 18 September 2011.

The exhibition traces the evolution of American art from the traditional national landscape to the liberating influence of European Modernism. The represented artists include William Merritt Chase, William Stanley Haseltine, Theodore Robinson, John Henry Twachtman, John Marin, John Sloan, Ernest Lawson, Fairfield Porter and Alex Katz. The event highlights the work of Childe Hassam.

The artists from the time of the Civil War frequently travelled to Europe to study art. The show features the work of American artists who spent many years abroad in the 1880’s and 1890’s, such as William Stanley Haseltine, William Lamb Picknell and Theodore Robinson. Artists like William Merritt Chase, John Henry Twachtman and Childe Hassam brought back new skills and knowledge to America.

The work of artists who remained in America is compared to that of those who travelled. After their sojourn in Europe, many artists returned to America with fresh enthusiasm and a new manner of expressing themselves. Their palettes became more luminous and brushwork more alive and intimate. Impressionist themes started to appear.

Hassam and Twachtman adapted Impressionism to the American context, placing more emphasis on their personal vision of nature than their French peers.
