An old motor bought for £60 by an enthusiast who turned it into one of the 'most beautiful racing cars of all time' has sold for £430,000.

The 1925 Bugatti was found by Jack Perkins in a beaten-up state at an aerodrome in 1950.
The blue, two-seater had been stripped of its original bodywork and gearbox and its engine had been swapped for a Vauxhall one.

It was being driven round the airfield by ground crew staff for fun.

The car's mechanical condition is not known and it will require re-commissioning, at the very least. But hopefully the new owner will return it to worker order so it will see active service again.

'Historically important Bugattis come onto the open market only rarely and this example represents an exciting opportunity to acquire a Type 35 in the model's ultimate, supercharged configuration.'

Jack was a mechanical engineer as well as the managing director of drill manufacturers John Perkins & Smith Ltd of Rugby, Warwickshire.

He paid £60 - about £1,300 today - for the Bugatti after finding it at the aerodrome in Nottingham.

Repairing the motor turned into a labour of love for him and he raced it regularly until 1988 when he was 78.

Among the modifications he made were the streamlining of the bodywork and running it on methanol rather than petrol, making it more powerful.

He took it to virtually all of the famous Bugatti Owners' Club hill climb events at Prescott Hill, Gotherington, Gloucestershire, between the late 1950s to 1988.

In 1981 he recorded a time of 46.21 seconds at the event - the fastest for a Bugatti Type 35B.
