Let's break into song, even if off key
People don't sing together like they used to. Oh, we'll all stumble and mumble through the "National Anthem" at a sports event, but families and friends no longer have sing-alongs for the fun of it.
Karaokes aren't the same thing. Everyone is just itching to do his or her solo, waiting for the guy with the foghorn baritone to get through his "Phantom of the Opera" selections.
Modern songwriters must share some of the blame. In the old days there wasn't such a huge generational music gap. Dad might have favored "Down by the Old Mill Stream," but he had no trouble belting out a Johnny Mercer tune. Irving Berlin lived to be over 100 and wrote songs for several generations of popular music lovers from "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911 to the immortal "I"m Dreaming of a White Christmas" and "Easter Parade" more than 40 years later.
We kids loved to sing on the corner where we hung out, songs like "The Jersey Bounce" and "Roll Out the Barrel". Once in awhile we'd hail the Manhattan-bound bus and when the driver opened the door, we'd sing "Give My Regards to Broadway". He never applauded.
I can't imagine a family today, off on a long drive in their SUV, passing the time by singing rock tunes or, God forbid, the profane lyrics of rap. We had a huge repertoire of songs with lyrics that everyone in the family knew from "Danny Boy" to "Moon River" and no one felt left out. If there were little ones in the back seat we would do a few choruses of "Old McDonald Had a Farm." However, if a teenager started to sing "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" he was in danger of being ejected at the next rest stop.
One reason I like to sing with a group is so my raucous voice can be lost in the crowd. No one has ever asked me to sing a solo. In fact when I said once that I loved to break into song, a friend remarked, "I guess you break in because you don't have the key."
The only solo renditions I've ever performed have been lullabies to an infant grandchild. Once when I was crooning a soothing Cole Porter tune to little Caroline, her mother leaned into the crib and said, "Honey, if you don't fall asleep soon, Grandpa is going to keep on singing and we can't have that.

But it's not all uplifting in this Easter Parade. Blinding light floods the doorway at one side of the auditorium and in it stands dark Judas, 30 pieces of silver clinking in his cargo pants. This can't be good. He climbs to the stage holding bandanas.
