Scam alert — avoid becoming a victim
Scam artists are getting more creative and sneaky in their attacks, and have started targeting the military, according to one Naval Air Station Lemoore official.
“We have seen a lot of cases on this base who have been scammed. It’s sad to see that the scammers have no boundaries, no conscience and no ethics and will target anyone who will fall victim to their scam,” said Stacey Harris, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society director at NASL.
Scams are becoming very sophisticated and very hard to detect and leave victims feeling embarrassed, ashamed, frustrated and worse — financially ruined, officials said. Equipment Operator First Class Grayden Hollister of CBMU-303 said he knows all too well the shame victims feel from being scammed because he was a victim himself. He agreed to share his story to prevent others from becoming victims.
“We were not educated and it seemed completely legitimate and now we are paying for it — literally,” Hollister said.
Hollister’s ordeal began on Craigslist through Petfinders.com when he responded to an inquiry about his dog. He had listed his pet on the site earlier under the “Free to a good home” heading. The man told Hollister he wanted to get the dog for his daughter’s birthday and wanted to pay for it.
“He sent us a cashier’s check. The amount of the cashier’s check was more than we expected and they informed us that they accidentally included the shipping charges in our check and requested we send the difference to the shipping company, who was scheduled to come and pick up the dog,” explained Hollister. “Everything seemed on the up and up until we found out a couple of days later that the cashier’s check was fraudulent and our bank was holding us responsible for the amount.”
The term “phishing” — as in fishing for confidential information — refers to a scam that encompasses fraudulently obtaining and using an individual’s personal or financial information. A consumer receives an email that appears to originate from a financial institution, government agency or other well-known/reputable entity like Craigslist, eBay or Petfinders, but in phishing scams, the website belongs to the scammer.
The links included in phishing scams take the unsuspecting person to a fraudulent website designed to mimic the real thing, often down to the smallest detail, including copyright notices, submenu titles and so on. It’s virtually impossible for most people to tell they are the target of a phisher by looking at the site alone.
