Must AMA be happy abolishing the shift school system?

The Junior Graphic (June 15-21, 2011, pg. 1) said, 'The abolition of the shift system in the Accra Metropolis to improve teaching and learning in schools has brought in its wake, a lot of problems for pupils, students and their teachers.'

In a 'Better Ghana', my expectation, as a citizen, is that any governmental decision taken, when implemented, should be able to make us more prosperous and comfortable than before. The implementation of a policy should not be done with needless political mindset, so that the ordinary Ghanaian can benefit from it.

We were all witnesses to the bragging of the Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for crediting themselves at having managed to abolish, not poverty, but a Shift System from public basic schools within the Metropolis.

Before the beginning of this very academic year, the Accra Mayor was always in the media telling us that the issue of congestion in Accra schools, which culminated in the institutionalisation of the shift educational system about 10 years ago, would be a thing of the past.

Truly, the abolishing decision was implemented, and in just a couple of weeks into the start of the 2010/2011 academic season, we were made to understand that the exercise had been completed for a more effective teaching and learning to commence in our schools.

In fact, some of us had already entertained the fear that though not a bad decision, the rush at which the decision was implemented might negatively affect teaching and learning and school administration, in general.

But a pro-Vanderpuije media friend of mine would think otherwise. He once argued that the Mayor, being a trained teacher himself, and having lived the most part of his life in the United States of America, would comfortably handle the system without any serious problems.

Meanwhile, as to whether it was Mr. Vanderpuije, with his proclaimed knowledge and expertise in education which would teach these pupils in the classrooms for the system to thrive, only my friend could tell.

Sitting down in a well-furbished, air-conditioned room, sipping posh drinks and claiming to be formulating a comprehensive and pragmatic educational policy is different from standing in front of pupils under the high classroom temperature condition, struggling to execute a teaching task.

Do you want to achieve Functional Fitness?  Do you want to save money?  Do you want to work out at your house instead of a crowded gym?  Are you overwhelmed with the amount of equipment in the stores? Do you want to save money?  Oh, did I mention that one already?  Hmm.

You do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on free weights and barbells. Don’t get me wrong – I love kettlebells, but they are extremely expensive. I know that cables are great for many core building exercises, but any version of a cable system is expensive. I use barbells and dumbbells a great deal when I work out at the gym at my job, but I’m spoiled with a free gym. 

But if I did not have this free gym, I would be like many of you out there – struggling to save money on exercise equipment. This these tips are intended to guide you so that you can get all the benefits of Functional Fitness while still being able to afford your kids’ little leagues.

TIP #1 – Save money on shoes. Simple…just work out barefoot. I have been doing this for quite some time now and love it. If you need some protection, buy some $9.99 water shoes or make your own huaraches .
