First thing we'll climb a tree

When one thinks of a time of renewal, spring usually pops to mind. After all, spring time has all the new flowers, grass, snow-less ground, etc., that just screams "new."

But I've always thought the start of summer was the best time for renewal. Those days right toward the end of June and early July where the sun stays out the longest, the temperature is at its warmest and the refreshments are at their coldest. These are the days where you step out your door in the morning, soak it all in, and say, "Today is a great day to be here."

One of the surest signs of renewal, in my eyes at least, is something that could be associated with ending: graduation.

The six elementary schools in our area held their graduation ceremonies; many of them on the same night (sidebar: thanks to the good people who lent a hand to help make sure every school was covered). And yes, while these kids are ending their elementary school careers, they are entering one of the biggest moments of their lives in just eight short weeks. The impact of that begins now; actually, it probably began before the diplomas were handed out and the valedictory speeches were given.

My ceremony to cover this year was Arran Tara Elementary School, who put on a "Back to the 80s" graduation for it students. The school looked great, the kids were dressed appropriately and the gym was about as hot as it could possibly be. All told, it reminded me a lot of my Grade 8 grad, 15 years earlier.

Sort of. Honestly, there's very little of that night I remember now. I remember I won an award (citizenship or something, I think; maybe academic achievement; maybe both now that I think about it). I remember actually slow dancing to "November Rain" instead of getting my heart broken to it (for once). I remember my hair and how much I really liked it, whether anybody else did or not. But that's about it. Couldn't tell you the theme of the night, what the speeches said or what songs played during the slide show (and yes, it was an actual slide show).

Turns out my friends don't remember much either, aside from the one girl who has put up several "embarrassing," yet nostalgic and heartwarming, pictures from the night. It's funny how a night, one that is pretty important in the grand scheme of things, and really important at the time, can fade from our memories so quickly. Maybe it's the other three graduations I've attended (and one I skipped) since then that pushed the first one aside. Maybe it's the countless ones I've covered here since I arrived that make them all seem like one big celebratory blur. Maybe it's just hindsight setting in and saying, "Hey, you have two university degrees, who cares if you weren't Valedictorian.
