Massive new soccer facility to open in wine country
Hundreds of San Diego-area soccer parents are, sooner or later, going to be heading for Riverside County's wine country.Temecula-based Arsenal FC plans to open a massive new soccer facility at Galway Downs, an equestrian center just minutes from several wineries. The proposed 63 acres of grass soccer fields would replace Arsenal FC’s old facility — the John Blanche Memorial Soccer Complex — which shut down in December.
The new facility, approximately seven miles east of Interstate 15 in a rural, unincorporated section of Riverside County, will host Arsenal FC’s home games, tournaments and likely be used for several other major youth soccer events that will draw teams from Chula Vista to Carlsbad. The old John Blanche facility hosted numerous local, regional and national tournaments that attracted hundreds of teams from San Diego County.
“We’re keeping a close eye on the progress of the facility,” California State Soccer Association-South CEO John Weinerth said. “It will absolutely have strong consideration for Cal South events.”
The project was originally approved in February by the Riverside County Planning Commission. Residents hoping to block it filed an appeal, but that was rejected by the commission last month.
Plans call for 24 soccer fields, including six that will have lights, according to a Riverside County Planning Department staff report. The facility will also have 1,930 parking spaces.
Although it is primarily being built for soccer, the fields would also be open to youth football, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, cross-country running, field hockey and “other similar recreational activities and regional tournaments,” the staff report says.
There are approximately 45,000 youth soccer players in San Diego County, Weinerth said, and Galway Downs would provide many teams with a closer potential destination during the spring tournament season.
This past spring, many competitive teams from the county traveled to faraway locations such as Bakersfield, Lancaster, Apple Valley and San Bernardino to compete in Cal South’s State Cup and National Cup competitions.
“For us, it’s a positive,” Weinerth said. “Our mission is to govern and grow the game in a responsible way, and having fields to play on is a critical part of that.”

The Cal South ODP Soccer Camps Program enters its twelfth year of operation designed for all boys and girls ages 8 to 15 committed to reaching the highest-level open to them in the sport. They are “developmental” in that our experienced camp staff, already used to dealing with and developing talent at the state, regional and national levels, will build on and improve the technical and tactical skills that players have acquired during the soccer year. Through our program, we will create a challenging environment where each player will learn about themselves – their strengths and weaknesses. Players will be encouraged to compete in and outside of their comfort zones, and will be given the knowledge and tools to improve. We have scheduled seven different day camps in strategic locations throughout Southern California this summer to provide every player between the ages of 8 and 15 the opportunity of attending. Each camp lasts three hours with the emphasis placed on quality not quantity. Each group will have a low coach-to-player ratio, so as to optimize the individual development of each player. For goalkeepers, every session includes specific goalkeeping training with our Goalkeeper Academy staff coaches.
