Water at the Heart of Intelligence: aquatic bodywork and heart ...
At a thermoneutral pool temperature of 34-35 degrees C, heart rate decreases and cardiac stroke volume increases. Although heart rate decreases, the net effect is still an increase of more than 30% in cardiac output [1,2]. In addition, Watsu-style bodywork has a balancing effect on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) [3]. Researchers (like IHM) are finding that ANS imbalance is the basis for numerous disease processes and impairments, such as the increasingly prevalent fibromyalgia and post-traumatic stress disorder. People who are trapped in their fight/ flight/ freeze response experience a physiological imbalance the effect of which is rather like pushing on the accelerator and the brake simultaneously. studies designed to advance our understanding of water's role as a bridge between the worlds of energy and matter will provide a crucial link between the realms of science and spiritual phenomena, bear profound implications for the betterment of human and environmental health, and may well help lay the foundations for a newly emerging scientific paradigm Indications that our bodies are a mass of fluctuating electrical impulses and energetic patterns , and that water has the capacity to transmit such vibrations may have much significance in aquatic bodywork. I speculate that the altered state experienced through passive motion in warm water is a result of responsive resonance between cellular fluids and the surrounding water. viewing water as the receptive medium into and through which life forms gather and distribute the energy that puts them in motion. As such, water provides the dynamic contextual highways and byways along and in which genetic information can flow and be exchanged and expressed in a myriad of diverse forms. Within it may lie the deep reason for emotion, our responsiveness to our own and other's needful being I have observed in my work that the wide variety of movements executable in water seem to stimulate and revive the brain and in doing so frequently trigger emotions or memories that have been suppressed [4]. The concepts of emotional intelligence and heart intelligence, acting independent of our cognitive powers, may help to explain why many people feel more balanced and more coherent after a water session.
