Mike's Rails: Pennsy Track Miles at the Peak

The Pennsylvania Railroad was definitely a regional line. The USA has never had a railroad with a national reach. Even as a regional, the Pennsy was one of the world's largest corporations at one point. At the end of its first 100 years in 1947 it was fourth largest in the US in mileage at 10,683 miles. It was the country's largest coal hauler. It's gross revenues were the country's largest. Freight receipts accounted for 67 percent of the gross and passenger receipts for 25.8 percent. It had paid its stockholders continuous dividends since its founding. By 1968 it merged with the New York Central and some smaller lines to avoid bankruptcy, and by 1976 the merged venture went out of business, to be rescued over the following 23 years by Conrail and the US Taxpayer. This is not unique in US railroad history. The PRR itself has its roots in the state financed Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad. The great railroads of the West have their roots in gigantic land grants the American taxpayer rewarded them with in exchange for laying track across their territory.
