students' net skills among world's best

Australian school students perform better at reading material online than the printed word, raising concerns among parents that children are becoming too dependent on technology.

A report by the Organisation for Economic Development and Co-operation, Students On Line, also ranked Australia among the top three developed countries for student use of the internet.

The OECD tested 15-year-olds in 17 countries about their use and knowledge of computers in 2009 as part of its triennial Program for International Student Assessment report on education results in developed countries.

It found that Australian students were among the most internet savvy in the world, with a high rate of browsing the internet for school work and homework. Almost 95 per cent of students used the internet at home and 92.5 per cent used the internet at school.

South Korea topped the survey in how 15-year-olds used computers and the internet to learn. Australia and New Zealand were ranked equal second.

Results for students in these three countries, along with Iceland, Sweden and Macao, in reading online significantly outstripped their performance in print reading.

Girls performed better than boys in digital reading, but the gender gap was narrower compared with print reading.

WA Council of State School Organisations president Robert Fry said it was no surprise that students were doing so well on computers because they had grown up with technology.

However, he was concerned children may become too reliant on technology, citing spelling and maths as two areas where the current generation was less proficient at getting it right mentally.

Willetton Senior High School has been one of WA's most enthusiastic adopters of technology. Every student in years 8 to year 11 has a laptop computer they can take home with them and all year 12s have access to desktop computers.

Principal Chris Booth said it was revolutionising the classroom.

"One of the key aspects is it means you've got worldwide data on tap," he said.
