Report rips ICE on enforcement | Philadelphia Daily News | 2011-08-18
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported people who had no criminal record and posed no threat to public or national security, according to a report of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
The report, "Immigration enforcement off target minor offenses with major consequences," is a compilation of 200 cases nationwide of immigrant clients who were arrested by local police and eventually detained by ICE.
The report, released Tuesday, nine of these clients were from Pennsylvania, two were deported, one left voluntarily and six cases are pending - including one in Philadelphia.
"What we hope the report stressed that the ice must match the reality of rhetoric", AILA Secretary William said Stock. "Secure Communities has to mean ICE deportation following priorities and not take someone who could possibly be accused of a crime. "
On June 23, City Council voted 17-0 to end the participation of the city in the program secure Communities, which expires Aug. 31. The program, which aims to combat terrorism, requires local police to share data of fingerprints of all those arrested with federal immigration.
Mayoral spokesman Mark McDonald said city officials will meet with ICE to discuss concerns.
The city agreed in 2008, designed to enforce immigration laws and to facilitate the expulsion through the ice and the state and local law enforcement agencies, was criticized by city officials and immigrant organizations.
