Cyclists Can Stay Vigilant To Prevent Road Accidents
Since the introduction of bike lanes, according to transportation officials city ridership has more than tripled in the past decade and risk of severe injury or death is down 75 percent. But it is clear accidents still happen and that cyclists, motorists and pedestrians need to learn the rules of the road. NY1's Health reporter Kafi Drexel filed the following report.Up until a few weeks ago, experienced cyclist and triathlete Isela Rosales had to rely on messages written on a handful of notecards to communicate, after breaking her jaw in a serious bike accident earlier this spring. "I was in the bike lane and noticed that there was some delivery trucks parked and before I knew it, there was actually a delivery cart right in front of me. And with little room to move, I swerved and braked and ultimately flipped over on my bike," says Rosales. "Granted, I wasn't going extremely fast, but it was enough that when I landed, I took the brunt of my fall on my face and my head."
Rosales says the helmet likely saved her life.
While she is finally able to talk again after nearly two months of having her jaw wired shut, she is still on a challenging all-liquid diet for the remainder of the year while she continues to recover.
Rosales' friend and fellow triathlete, Lucy Danziger, is the editor-in-chief of SELF Magazine. An avid cyclist who bikes to work, Danziger says there is a lot to learn from Rosales' story. According to the Department of Transportation, on-street bike lanes are designed specifically for the use of cyclists.
But sharing the streets definitely goes both ways. On camera, cyclists were caught going the wrong way on their special lanes.
"Just like you look both ways before crossing the street, if you're gonna be crossing a bike lane, do the exact same thing," says Rosales.
