2011 SEC bounce-back players

Today we take a look at two bounce-back players for the Georgia Bulldogs :

OFFENSE

Bruce Figgins , FB, Sr.: Figgins was a top tight end prospect coming out of high school and played in 13 games, starting one, as a true freshman in 2007. He appeared in 11 more games in 2008 and made two more starts, but after two seasons he had just five catches for 56 yards. In 2009, he decided to redshirt after serving a six-game suspension for disciplinary reasons. He returned last fall, played in all 13 games, including making one start, and caught four passes for 27 yards and two touchdowns. He enters the 2011 season at his new home at fullback, where he is competing with Alexander Ogletree for the starting spot. For the first time in four years, the Bulldogs will have a new starter at fullback and Figgins showed flashes this spring that he could fit in well at his new position.

DEFENSE

Richard Samuel, LB, Jr.: It's been a long and bumpy road for Samuel. He arrived at Georgia as a highly-touted running back that most considered better suited for linebacker. However, he had his heart set on running back, so Georgia signed him as one. He recorded 26 carries in 11 games as a freshman and started six of 11 games, registering 88 carries for 395 yards in 2009. But Samuel could never break ahead of the running backs in front of him and moved to outside linebacker and then inside linebacker last spring. Now, he's competing for time behind Alec Ogletree at one of the middle linebacker spots. Samuel is very much in the mix for playing time this fall and could shift outside to Jarvis Jones' spot if Jones has to miss time because of the improper benefits situation with his former AAU coach . Every year we look at players who just didn't come through the season before. It's a harsh reality in today's sports atmosphere with all the suffocating hype and expectations.

Today, we start to discuss players in the SEC who are looking for a rebound season in 2011. Some were either injured the year before or fell below expectations. That means redshirt freshmen aren't eligible, but a player who missed most of the year due to injury, like Ole Miss' Kentrell Lockett or LSU's Sam Montgomery, is.

Each day, we'll take a look at one player on both offense and defense from each team looking for that bounce-back season this fall.

Nov. 26 – vs. Florida State

Last meeting: Nov. 27 – Florida State 31-7

Series record & streak: Florida leads 33-20; Florida State won the last one

Starters lost/returning: 3/8 offense; 3/8 defense

Scouting the Seminoles: A 31-7 thrashing in Tallahassee last year surely didn’t sit right with the Gators or their fans after winning the past six over their biggest rivals. Unfortunately for them, more of that could be in store this year. The Seminoles are expected to be a top-10 team when the season starts and have the pieces to be back in contention for the ACC title.
