Visitors surround crash survivor
A star basketball player from Canterbury High School remained in a drug-induced coma Monday after surviving a weekend plane crash that killed his father and stepmother.
Austin Hatch, 16, was in a small single-engine plane when it slammed into a garage in a neighborhood near the Charlevoix (Mich.) Municipal Airport about 7:30 p.m. Friday. His father, Dr. Stephen Hatch, and stepmother, Kim Hatch, also were aboard but did not survive.
Media reports said Hatch was to be brought out of the coma beginning Monday. But Dr. David Bojrab said he was still in a drug-induced coma Monday.
Along with a head injury, Hatch also suffered a punctured lung, a broken collarbone and fractured ribs.
“They’re not going to wake him up for a few days,” said Bojrab, who was Stephen Hatch’s medical practice partner.
Bojrab said the family asked him not to say anything else. He previously told The Journal Gazette that the Hatches were flying to a summer home in Walloon Lake at the time of the crash.
Hatch was listed in critical condition Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Hospital officials said Monday there was no one with that name in its directory.
“I know that he’s had visitors to the point that the hospital has asked for immediate family only (to visit) now,” said Scott Kreiger, Canterbury girls basketball coach, who did not travel to Michigan. “There have been so many visitors that it has caused a lot of traffic up there.”
Hospital spokesman Dale Killingbeck gave a statement on behalf of the family and referred people to Hatch’s Caring Bridge site at www.caringbridge.org/visit/AustinHatch .
“Austin remains in critical condition but is recovering. We ask that everyone respect our family’s privacy during this time of grief,” the statement said. “We appreciate the prayers, concerns, and outpouring of sympathy.”
The Associated Press reported that the Hatches’ dog Brady survived the crash. The Labradoodle was found within a mile of the crash site in Charlevoix and was identified by an imbedded microchip.
Another dog aboard the plane died, the AP reported.
Hatch will be a junior at Canterbury and recently committed to play basketball at the University of Michigan.
Numerous Canterbury players were in Traverse City on Monday, and former Blackhawk Christian standout and current Michigan State player Russell Byrd was at Hatch’s bedside.
